The Create a Villain Contest!

September 4, 2012 - 4:13pm -- Christopher

Greetings, Sentinels fans! Today, September 4th, officially kicks off our Create a Villain contest!

From now until September 28th, we will be taking entries (limited to 2 entries per person, please). For your entry, please include descriptions of the villain's look and abilities, plus whatever other "flavor" elements you feel are important to the villain. It is not necessary to include art, but we will accept art as part of the entry, so if you feel it would help us understand the villain better, feel free to send pictures along with your descriptions. Similarly, you do not have to include a full deck list and flip mechanic for your character, but doing so will certainly give your entry an advantage.

In terms of flavor and theme, the next set is based on time travel and alternate realities, so your villain should be tied in to that somehow. Feel free to tie your character's story to that of other existing characters and locations from Sentinels of the Multiverse, but also know that we may change any/all of such things, if your character is selected.

To submit an entry, e-mail me at christopher@sentinelsofthemultiverse.com with the words "Create a Villain contest" in the subject line. Remember, include as much or as little info/art as you want per character, and no more than two entries per person. We will no longer be accepting entries as of the end of the 28th, and I will post an official end announcement at that time. The winning villain will be announced the first week of October.

I look forward to your villains! Bring on the bad guys!

Here's all the stuff lawyers love! Silliness aside, it is important:

After reading the all the legal, the only issue I'd have with submitting a villain, is I'd still like to be able to use my villain (at least in it's original, unmodified form) for my own stuff (assuming I can even make my own stuff).  I've had the basis of a story going for some time, and if I could ever get to it, I'd like to actually make the story (whether it's a video game, board game, card game, comic book, novel, whatever).  I'd really like the idea for one of these characters to be included in the Sentinels of the Multiverse series, but I wouldn't want to be locked out from using this character again in my own stuff.  Maybe something along the lines of maintaining ownership, with a perpetual license for GTG to use with no restrictions, or maybe even GTG ownership with the future posibility of licensing the property back to me, or even having me maintain the ownership of the original, and allowing GTG the exclusive ownership of the derived character (afterall, I wouldn't really have any use for the final derived character).

Though, I guess one other thing I could do is create a remarkably similar but legally distinct variant of my existing character, and, thus, not have to deal with any of that.

Citizen Dawn uses waves of powerful Citizens.  Expatriette uses powerful waves of bullets.

Knowing is half the battle.  The other half is violence.

UNLIMITED! Not from the original print run!

Not remotely mine, so I can't claim any credit for this, but you all should see if you can contact Rex Velvet, the Seattle Supervillain. He rose to dominance in the wake of several scandals plaguing Phoenix Jones, a real-life "superhero" who patrols the streets of Seattle, breaks up fights that don't want to be broken up, and pepper-sprays protesters. Rex Velvet's only real villainry thus far has been kidnapping a Make-A-Wish volunteer and calling for Jones to step down, but one can always imagine he does worse when the need arises.

Can multiple entries be submitted at once, or should they be seperate emails?

Separate e-mails would be best! Just for sorting purposes come three weeks from now.

Are there any rewards beyond our villain being in the game? And will entries be voted on by the community eventually? Or is it just which everone you guys pick?

Besides having the villain in the game, the winning villain creator will receive a free copy of the game.

The winner will be chosen by Greater Than Games.

Would you prefer submissions to be in the email itself, or as an attachment?

If in the email itself, will text formatting (such as in gmail) be visible to you?

if as an attachment, what is your preferred file format?

Either in-line or as an attachment is fine. However, as an attachment, I would prefer either .doc or .pdf.

Would you be willing to accept a PNG scanned image in addition to inline email description?

Could we be given a general idea about what the other three villains will be like, so we don't submit something too similar to what's there already?

There is a chipmunk in the center of the universe.

In Ghat they believe in vampire watermelons, although folklore is silent about what they believe about vampire watermelons.
Possibly they suck back.

All I will say is not to submit any dream-based villains. Other than that, I'm not worried about overlap. *grin*

I know you've said it's unlikely that our ideas will overlap, but in the event that they do (because I'm paranoid like that), is it okay to submit the entry again, just with a different villain character (keeping the same mechanics and whatnot)?

My body is ready.

If it comes up, I'll let the submitter know.

Are team submissions allowed?  I would like to work with a friend of mine to create a character but would like for both of us to receive credit.

Thanks

Certainly! You will have to split the rewards (share the game), but you would both receive credit.

I finally got to play the Relics expansion last night and am a little sad that my submission is so mechanically close to something just printed. I don't know if that means I'm on the right track in thinking, or if I'm just too late to the party. :p

So, by "end of the 28," do you mean before midnight, central time? You guys are in Missouri, aren't you?
